DIY Solutions for Stray Socks, Shampoo Explosions & More

Have you ever had a bottle of shampoo explode in your luggage? How about a sock without its match? Is your shower crammed with miscellaneous body washes, hair products, and soap bottles? In one way or another, we've all experienced these seemingly unpreventable mishaps. Sadly, we often accept these universal day-to-day problems as unavoidable, inevitable facts of modern life. But there are plenty of creative, hassle-free solutions to many of the annoyances and difficulties we face.

Apartment Therapy has compiled a list to help you and your family tackle some of the most common household challenges.

1. Problem: Bobby pins seem to pop up everywhere. Why can't they seem to stay in one place?

Solution: This case from Lovely Indeed, which you can make for yourself from an empty Tic Tac container. Fresh breath and organization: what more could you want?

2. Problem: Your family uses WAY too many cups.

Solution: Everyone gets to pick one special cup, whatever color or style they love most. Then, glue magnets on one side for cups that stick to the fridge! These beverage holders from Made Everyday show the theory in practice.

3. Problem: Stray socks that keep losing their match.

Solution: Create a frame for single socks to meet their sole-mate. Download this $6 printable file from Studio 120 on Etsy, put it in a frame near the laundry machines, and hot glue clothespins to the bottom.

4. Problem: You keep accidentally placing dirty dishes in a dishwasher full of already cleaned dishes.

Solution: Use ribbons and markers to decorate your own magnet, like this one from BrightNest, which you can turn over whenever you unload or run the dishwasher.

5. Problem: You have too many hygiene products crowding the shower.

Solution: This SHOWER HACKS video from Youtuber Alisha Marie demonstrates how to use handy curtain clips to hang your face scrub and other bottles from a tension rod (or, alternatively, the towel rod, with shower rings that double-serve as clasps).

6. Problem: All your keys look identical to each other.

Solution: Color-code them with NAIL POLISH, just like these manicured keys from  I Spy DIY.

7. Problem: The window blinds are always dusty.

Solution: With dish towels and a pair of kitchen tongs, make your own custom tool, just like this one from One Crazy House.

8. Problem: Your shampoo burst open and leaked all over your luggage.

Solution: Before you travel, unscrew the lid of your shampoo, cover the opening with plastic wrap and re-close the lid. That's what Graceship did in the picture above, which you can look at for reference. This life hack can be a lifesaver for packing or when your moving to a new apartment with spillable bathroom and kitchen supplies in tow.

9. Problem: You never know which cord is which on your power strip.

Solution: With a bit of colorful tape and a good pen or sharpie, you'll never mix up those cords again. Check out how The Chic Site differentiated between cords.

10. Problem: Your pesky cords keep sliding off your desk.

Solution: Binder clips can be used for more than just paper. Clip them to the edge of your desk, and fasten the cords inside the clip handles, just like did in the photo above.

Problem: Your troublesome cords keep sliding off the desk and you can never tell which is which.

Solution: Kiss your cord woes goodbye with this invention that solves multiple cord-related problems at once. One part binder clip, one part tape label, these little label-clips from Everyday Dishes have got you covered.
